Our Superhero Got a Sidekick! Sweet Baby C’s Fresh 48 and Newborn Shoot in Zeeland

Remember this favorite little superhero from Zeeland? He just got a sweet little sidekick!

I love getting to work with families over and over again, and these beautiful transplanted French kiddos are no exception!

Baby C was born just after Christmas, so I couldn’t resist including some wintery magic in the mix. Can you tell her big brother is excited? He liked the hat I crocheted for him, but LOVED getting to hold his sweet little sister. And she just looked adoringly back!

One of my favorite things about newborns (besides their teeny tiny sweet snuggles) is getting to visit them in the hospital before they come home. I call them Fresh 48’s, since these are generally within 48 hours of the little one’s arrival, but in Baby C’s case I got to see, hold, and capture her within 8 hours of her being born at Zeeland Hospital!

Sweet Fresh 48 Session at Zeeland Spectrum Hospital with O'Chung Newborn Photographer

I’m pretty sure Baby C (and her mama!) enjoyed those first hours of quiet, uninterrupted sleep… when her big brother was around, she was much more interested in everything going on around her. Even the super-soft sweater grandma knit and her adorable snowsuit didn’t lull her off to Lala Land!

Sweet sleep eventually did come, but was short-lived.

Then it was time for more food. Good thing I always build lots of time in for snacks during the session!Sweet chubby crying newborn with French Mom in Knit Yellow Sweater and Jean Dress in West MI

I know a lot of parents worry about how kids will act during a session, especially when it comes to newborns, as we just don’t know if they’ll be interested in sleeping or not! But I know life happens, and I’m all about capturing the real-life moments in-between the poses. Sometimes these are the shots that will make them smile the most, and I know parents treasure having these memories just as much as their little ones will someday!

I am always so honored when parents entrust their sweet little ones to me, especially in the hectic, tiring time right after they’re born. These little international kids are currently soaking up time with grandma and grandpa who are visiting from France, which keeps things even more interesting! But everyone was smiling by the end, and these first moments of a little superhero and his sidekick together are going to be carried with them forever. I can’t wait to deliver their artwork and canvas to them soon!

In the meantime, I’m starting to think that quote might be true:

Being a superhero is awesome, but sometimes being a big brother is even better than being a superhero!

Remember this super-fun couple? Soon after their maternity shoot around Holland, I had the honor of capturing their precious, sleepy son in action. I’ve heard he didn’t stay sleepy for long, but he sure did a good job for me at his first-ever photo shoot! This adorable little guy was NOT one to be swaddled… but he WAS ready to jump into the great wide world outside, and was happiest when he could STRETCH out during his naps and put his hands on his ears!

After a quick feeding and diaper change, we took some life-style pictures with mom and dad. Their room was a bit cooler (without the lovely heater beside us), so Baby B decided to wake up for this part of the shoot. But it didn’t seem to matter – awake or asleep, this guy was chillaxed and knew how to handle himself in front of a camera!

It was such a blessing to be able to capture this little guy in the first week of his life. By the time I met with his parents a couple of weeks later to share his shoot, he had already changed! It’s for this reason that I love to help preserve these moments professionally for parents to look back on and smile. The tiny features are so quickly lost in the midst of those first sleepless nights and long days… then suddenly he’s enjoying tummy time, smiling back at you, and showing his personality… and you realize it’s time for his 3-month shoot later this week!

Kids Will Be Kids… (or) What to Expect at Your Session

So often, we expect our kids to be mini-adults at the flick of a button. Don’t get me wrong – I’m a huge believer in holding kids to high standards and expecting them to be respectful and kind! But there are times and days when the filter we wish they had over their mouth… simply disappears. And that gorgeous dress we just put them in? Gets covered in dirt the moment they step out the door. The truth is, there are some things our favorite little people just aren’t capable of doing. Like sitting still for a 30 minute session in their perfectly arranged dress. (Let’s be honest… adults can’t do that either!)

Kids Being Kids Collage O'Chung Children's Photography

And that’s ok. As a K-3 teacher of 6 years, and a lover of littles, I get it. I know kids will be kids, often at the moment we most want them to be mini-adults. I know kids need breaks, and that they need to move. Be ready for your child to be tired after playing hard during their session! Bring a water bottle and a non-messy snack along for break time – these real-life moments make some of the best pictures too! 🙂 Know that you’ll probably be in front of the camera for a few shots as you interact with your child. And be ready for us to transition from one thing to the next just as fast as your child can move.

parents collage

I often say that I’m a “real-life” photographer. I love to incorporate fun, play, and daily life into my sessions, and I am all about helping capture images of your child in the midst of daily life. While I can’t realistically come to your home and follow your child around for a full day, I WOULD like the pictures I take to be some of your favorite memories of this stage of their lives. It’s helpful if you prepare them ahead for the idea of what’s going to happen, but I also know that things rarely go “as planned.” That serious expression, a few tears, or just being a goofy kid having fun? We can work with that!

funny poses faces blog composite O'Chung Photography

So prep your child, tell them my name, and by all means let them know I’m someone you expect for them to listen to and respect. But then, chillax! Remember that your child feeds off of your emotions – they can read us better than we know! So if you’re stressed and worried about getting everything perfect before the shoot, chances are your child will be grumpy and stressed too. Talk with me ahead of time about your concerns*, get everything ready the night before, and then the day of, relax. Bring something to do during the session, and let me do my job. And with a little love, and a lot of running around, I’ll get you some of your most treasured keepsakes that you’ll look back on with smiles for years to come!

Notes and Ideas:

*I meet with clients before their shoot either in person or via email to brainstorm and plan together. I love to learn about your child(ren) so I can capture what makes them tick. This consultation time is extra fun if parents come with ideas already in hand or a Pinterest board of styles and ideas you can share! We’ll work together to make this shoot all about your child and YOU!

Superhero Children's Photographer O'Chung Photography Superman

Is your child obsessed with Thomas? Have him bring some trains to tell me about and a conductor’s hat to wear. Super-hero lover? Grab a partial mask and a cape and let them role play. Budding drummer? Bring a few pots and pans for us to set up and a couple of wooden spoons and we’ll let them express themselves as they do at your home. Does your daughter love all things princess and still sings “Let it go” continually? While I’ve found that the super-plasticky Halloween costume dresses don’t make the prettiest pictures, give her a twirly dress and the appropriate hair bows… and whatever other props she plays with continually at your home. I believe in capturing the passions, joys, and favorite aspects of whatever stage of life your child is in. So let me know a few of your child’s favorite things, and we’ll work together to incorporate them in to the forever-memories were about to create and that you’ll love for years to come! They’ll enjoy their time more, their expressions will be more real, and you will forever remember (with a smile) those days of pan-drumming that led to an all-state soloist in high school!

VanRaalte Farm Family Lifestyle Photography Holland MI

Robertson Family Mother’s Day Session at Holland State Park and VanRaalte Farms

One of the things I love most about doing photography sessions is making new friends along the way. I think every family is unique, and that their sessions should reflect that. After all, shouldn’t their pictures speak to who they are in this season of life, reflect their personality, and make them smile every time they come in the door? Not using the cookie-cutter-posed-session approach means I get to connect with every family and/or individual before their session to find out what makes them uniquely… them! And as I listen to what they’re most excited about in this time of life, I end up getting to know their stories and some fun details along the way. And it’s even more fun when I can’t wait to connect with them again. That’s how it was with this family.

I got to meet the Robertson Family when Mr. R called requesting a gift session for his wife. (Mother’s Day present for the win!) Soon after scheduling, he handed me off to his wife to discuss details and so that I could learn more about their family. I loved hearing the story of how they met (Go GVSU Laker Navy!), got to hear about Little Miss O’s amazing dancing abilities, and was excited to help them capture some great memories as a family of three before a new little one arrived later this year!

I knew we had to include some reading time and swinging, as these were some of little O’s favorite things!

Of course, when spending time on the beach, getting sand in your fingers and toes is always a must.

…and so is getting some high-flyin’ fun on the boardwalk!

After getting sandy, the super-patient Robertson family threaded their way through Holland, MI’s construction and stand-still traffic to VanRaalte Farms. I can’t believe I didn’t know this place existed before now! We loved the old barn, the sunshine, and all that GRASS!

As soon as I heard that Little Miss O LOVES to dance to the “Hot Dog” song from Mickey Mouse Club, I knew we had to play it! I grabbed my phone on the way to the farm (thanks Google!) and found the YouTube version. O was a little confused at first with no screen to be seen, but she (and her parents!) soon got into the swing! Check out these great moves! 🙂

Since mom and dad met at GVSU and rowed together all through college, we knew we had to get some GVSU love into the memory books. On went the T-shirts!

We were getting tired and ready to call it a day, but when they realized they’d forgotten Puppy in the car, we made sure to grab a few last shots with him before they went on their way!

Anticipating the Celebration – 4th of July with the Tillard Family at Holland’s Kollen Park

Some nights are made for staying up late. December 31 and July 4, near polar opposites on the calendar, are two of those nights. One marks new beginnings, a new year, and looking forward towards the future. The other, a celebration of those who have gone before us, fighting for freedoms we often take for granted.

My husband and I were lucky enough to spend time with good friends over the long 4th of July weekend, including our dear friends the Tillards. I’m so thankful for the ways that this girl put up with me through three loonnnnnggg years of college, and for the way her husband has become best friends with mine! I’m also so glad that after nearly 10 years away from Holland, we could pick right back up where we left off when I returned to this lovely place!

But their kids. Oh my, can I say cute? I officially brought my camera to the firework show Monday night to, well, capture the fireworks. But really, I just wanted to capture these adorable faces!

Because sometimes, the anticipation of what’s to come is just too.stinking.much to hold inside. Can you believe this little mouse?

And then there was his brother… taking selfies with dad and jumping for joy of the coming fireworks in his own way.

A World of Fun at Tulip Time’s Kinderplaats!

IMG_5897

This year was my first real chance to experience Tulip Time. As a Hope student, we always seemed to leave before “the big event,” and last year we were too busy planning a wedding to stop and smell the tulips! But this year I was determined to enjoy the week to the fullest.

And boy, did I come to understand what the locals mean when they say the week is crazy! My husband and I were glad we lived within walking distance of everything, since we wouldn’t have been able to park any closer anyway.

I got the chance to volunteer as a photographer at Tulip Time’s Kinderplaats, which is a fun and games time for the littles at Kollen Park. The wind off Lake Macatawa brought shivers, but the smiles on kids faces shone brighter than the sun! It was a blast watching the kids get stickers on their “passports” as they raced from one Netherlands province to another and rode fun rides at the carnival.

Here are a few of the pictures from the day (posted with parental permission, of course!)

Sweet 7-Month Musician Photo Shoot in Holland, MI

I got to visit this little one and his mom while the rest of the family was away for the day. I  loved following this sweet little 7-month-old budding musician around! Mom was well-prepared with props, and he was a trooper till the very end with all his adorable outfits. Here’s a bit of our busy shoot. 🙂

With a request from mom, we started off our morning hanging out with a few of his favorite buds.

Then we moved on to some music. His is a family of musicians, and they’re eager for their littlest member to join the band! In the meantime, though, he seems a bit more interested in eating anything he can get his hands on… and dancing to whatever music mom puts on! 😉
