Our Superhero Got a Sidekick! Sweet Baby C’s Fresh 48 and Newborn Shoot in Zeeland

Remember this favorite little superhero from Zeeland? He just got a sweet little sidekick!

I love getting to work with families over and over again, and these beautiful transplanted French kiddos are no exception!

Baby C was born just after Christmas, so I couldn’t resist including some wintery magic in the mix. Can you tell her big brother is excited? He liked the hat I crocheted for him, but LOVED getting to hold his sweet little sister. And she just looked adoringly back!

One of my favorite things about newborns (besides their teeny tiny sweet snuggles) is getting to visit them in the hospital before they come home. I call them Fresh 48’s, since these are generally within 48 hours of the little one’s arrival, but in Baby C’s case I got to see, hold, and capture her within 8 hours of her being born at Zeeland Hospital!

I’m pretty sure Baby C (and her mama!) enjoyed those first hours of quiet, uninterrupted sleep… when her big brother was around, she was much more interested in everything going on around her. Even the super-soft sweater grandma knit and her adorable snowsuit didn’t lull her off to Lala Land!

Sweet sleep eventually did come, but was short-lived.

Then it was time for more food. Good thing I always build lots of time in for snacks during the session!Sweet chubby crying newborn with French Mom in Knit Yellow Sweater and Jean Dress in West MI

I know a lot of parents worry about how kids will act during a session, especially when it comes to newborns, as we just don’t know if they’ll be interested in sleeping or not! But I know life happens, and I’m all about capturing the real-life moments in-between the poses. Sometimes these are the shots that will make them smile the most, and I know parents treasure having these memories just as much as their little ones will someday!

I am always so honored when parents entrust their sweet little ones to me, especially in the hectic, tiring time right after they’re born. These little international kids are currently soaking up time with grandma and grandpa who are visiting from France, which keeps things even more interesting! But everyone was smiling by the end, and these first moments of a little superhero and his sidekick together are going to be carried with them forever. I can’t wait to deliver their artwork and canvas to them soon!

In the meantime, I’m starting to think that quote might be true:

Being a superhero is awesome, but sometimes being a big brother is even better than being a superhero!

Senior Family O'Chung Photography Holland MI

Theo’s Holland High 2017 Senior + Family Session

Sometimes, the idea of a Senior Shoot just seems a little intimidating. It’s all you, just one person, trying to be yourself with a (granted, friendly and fun-loving) photographer you’ve met once or twice before in your pre-session consultations. Why not have your family jump in and have a few laughs along the way!? Especially when you’re shooting at the park you grew up playing in with your brothers, and even more so when your last family pictures were 12 years before?! In this case we combined two sessions into one, but other seniors have opted to do an add-on and take just a few shots with their family or a few friends.

Theo and his family were a joy to photograph. They were fun, easy-going, and so photogenic! The light was perfect, too… a storm had rolled in right that afternoon, in typical Michigan fashion, but the light broke through just before their shoot.

Here are a few favorites from this sweet, welcoming, adventurous, Star Wars-loving family!

“A daughter is a miracle that never ceases to be miraculous… full of beauty and forever beautiful… loving and caring and truly amazing.” – Deanna Beisser

It was J’s special day, and the backdrop for the quinceañera (or quince, for short) reception was nothing short of perfect. (If you missed part one of J’s quince blog, click here to check it out!)

J’s Gorgeous Quinceañera Celebration in Holland’s Baker Lofts and Kollen Park

“Beauty is a radiance that originates from within and comes from inner security and a strong character.”
– Jane Seymour

There are moments in every girls life that make us grow up, with or without our knowledge, and I consider it a distinct privilege to be invited into these precious moments and help capture them for all time. J’s 15th birthday quinceañera celebration at Baker Lofts was one of these occasions for this young woman and her family as she took yet another gorgeous step into her future. It was a celebration of a faith that is fully her own, of an extended family that has stood beside and behind her, and of the amazing faithfulness of a God who has and will continue to make her more and more beautiful inside and out each day as she grows fully into the radiant and joyful woman she was made to be!

I met J and her family for pictures at sunny Kollen Park after a lovely service at our church. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to photograph the ceremony at the church, but all the accessories (shoes, jewelry, tiara) she’s wearing in these pictures were given as symbolic gifts at the service beforehand. Each represented her moving forward into her own faith and not just relying on that of her parents. I love the strong spiritual symbolism!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the event, a quinceañera is a Hispanic and Latin American coming-of-age celebration for girls that has a lot of similarities to a wedding… without the groom, of course! There’s the gorgeous 15 year old girl…

…and her party of damas and chambelanes (girl- and boy- friends), including a “man of honor” who accompanies her throughout the big day.

Of course, what young woman can come of age without a picture with all her uncles? Watch out guys! I’d say this gorgeous girl is in good hands! 🙂Jade's Quince - Low-Res (32)

After a few more family and friend pictures, they fixed her dress so she could breathe in the heat, and we grabbed a few more precious pictures with her father before heading to Baker Lofts for the reception.

In the interest of space, I will be sharing the rest of the fun in a follow-up post later this week. Get ready for more pictures of this incredible young woman (and that dress!), food, choreographed dancing, lots of cell phones (hey, they’re teenagers after all), and of course, a birthday piñata!

Superhero boy playing shooting Holland MI

Favorite Superhero Photo Shoot at Baker Lofts in Holland, MI

Kids love to dress up and act out life in a big way, and this almost-5 year old is no exception. Not only is he one of my favorite little superheroes, but I’m pretty sure this cutey can literally run 100mph! His mom and I had a fun time chasing him around Baker Lofts, capturing his abundant expressions and everything he is excited about in this stage of life!

We stopped for a snack part-way through, and he was bound and determined to act out the William Tell story in pictures! (Good thing he brought his suction-cup bow and arrows!) Other fun props in his bag of tricks included his beloved monkey, a camera of his own, a dump truck, and lots of super-power poses!

I’m thrilled with how these turned out – including a new Photo Poster idea we’ve been playing with here at O’Chung Studios! 🙂

And… the posters! We’re excited to start creating some fun templates that people can choose from to get printed for their kid’s rooms – or their homes :).
(Don’t worry – there are lots of girl versions on their way too!)
